Copenhagen has plenty of hotels for you to choose from. You have quirky hotels, modern hotels, those which are beautiful and those which have plenty of history. However, you also have some hotels which have it all. Enter the NH Grand Joanne Hotel.
I know what you’re thinking – NH Hotels have lots of hotels across Europe and are unlikely to have produced a unique, boutique-feeling hotel with a brilliant location in Copenhagen, just a few hundred metres from the station. That’s where you’d be wrong. If you’re looking for a hotel in Copenhagen this year. turn your attention to the Grand Joanne. It most definitely will surprise you.
The NH Grand Joanne Hotel | My Quick Review
Before we begin, I’ve stayed at the NH Grand Joanne Hotel a few times. Firstly, I stayed before it was bought and renovated by NH Hotels. I remember it being nice and having character features, those which you might expect from a 19th Century building in the heart of the city. The most recent time was during our 2026 Interrail adventure across Scandinavia. You’ve probably noticed it if you’ve walked to Tivoli Gardens. Now, the hotel has pastel pink NH bikes stood outside of it and it’s become a bit of a thing on the socials.
The hotel was the final one on our journey and we actually arrived extremely early due to a train. In fact, we arrived at 08:30. Expecting to drop our bags in the storage cupboard or pay a bit extra (other Danish hotels would charge 200 DKK, around £22, to check-in early), we were pleasantly surprised to receive our room keys. What was even better was that we extended check-out at the end by an hour at no extra fee. Whilst usually I don’t go into personal stories on these quick reviews, I wanted to give them a shoutout for this. Nowadays it is extremely rare to be able to arrive early without paying an additional fee.

Location of the NH Grand Joanne Hotel
When you’re completing an Interrail trip, you need to stay near the station usually. There are so many early trains in order to make the most of your pass. The NH Grand Joanne Hotel arguably is the best hotel in Copenhagen for this. Not only is it right by the station, but you get that little bit of luxury at an extremely reasonable price.
If you aren’t familiar with the layout of Copenhagen, the station area is right by the Tivoli Gardens. This is an old theme park which has been a constant feature of the city since 1843. If you love rides or just beautiful gardens, this is a perfect place to go in the evening. I’ve written more about them in my 24 hours in Copenhagen quick guide.
Just down the road from Tivoli though is the Old Town, and this is where you’ll find most of the shopping opportunities in the city. You are also right by the famous old docks. To get here from the Grand Joanne it is about a 5 minute walk, with the docks taking a little more than that (15 minutes or so). I personally would say that this is preferable to staying in the Old Town, which gets insanely busy during peak times of the year. The Grand Joanne is close enough to get the experience of Copenhagen, but far away enough to have some peace.
Aside from that, the area around the Grand Joanne is filled with some great bars and restaurants. The CoFoCo Group have a few great options here, including Delphine (a Mediterranean restaurant) and the Coco Bar in the Coco Hotel.

The Room
We were booked in to one of their standard double rooms and were on the third floor. What I loved straight away was the gorgeous pink carpet outside of the room. It was incredibly fun and Scandi-chic, but still strangely matched the history of a large 19th century building. What I would say though is that it felt very boutique like; I can’t really think of another big hotel brand I’ve stayed in where the style is just so unique.
The room matched this Scandinavian style. Our furniture was that in-trend washed-out wood and the furnishings were on brand too. Think of dusty pinks and gold with complimentary colours, a palette which was replicated in the newly-fitted bathroom too. Our bed was also extremely comfortable and the bedding was just incredible. It was super high quality and I had the best nights sleep on our holiday here.
During our two week adventure in Scandinavia, the hotel rooms had been varied and it seemed as if you got less than in other parts of the world. Very few gave much in the room, including a kettle and teas / coffees. However, the NH Grand Joanna completely bucked this trend. We had a (stylish) kettle complete with two beautiful porcelain cups to enjoy a selection of teas in.
If you thought that this would be a standard big-brand hotel room, you couldn’t have been more wrong.

The Grand Joanne Bar and Restaurant
The NH Grand Joanne Hotel has a few options for food and drink. My favourite thing about this though is that there is actually a rooftop bar here. Yes, you read that right – this hotel has a rooftop bar with views over the city. This is the perfect place to retreat during the summer months. Sadly for us it was closed when we were there due to the weather, but I am very much planning on returning so that I can try it. When we went up to look at it the bar looked really cool.
Downstairs has another bar and an Italian restaurant. The food here was rather good and was decently priced. There is no discount for hotel guests as far as I could see and the menu is very much Italian rather than traditional Scandinavian flavours. Plus, with Copenhagen having a vibrant dining scene, it would always be best to explore your options before committing (the meat-packing district diners and Gasoline Grill are not too far away).
I did however really enjoy the vibe of the downstairs bar. Like the rest of the hotel, the space was immaculately decorated and thought had gone into even the tiniest details, such as ornaments on the tables. It felt as if I was in an incredibly stylish Scandinavian home decor magazine – I don’t think I experienced anything else quite like it on our trip. The drinks were also decently priced too, which is something rare to find in Copenhagen.

The Service
I’ve already said about our experience here and how pleased we were. Genuinely, I can’t remember a time recently where we’ve had that level of kindness with hotel service. This was true at other points too; there was always a hello when we entered and the staff very much wanted us to feel at home. It feels cliché to say, but it is very much how we felt. In short, we felt that we were valued guests rather than a number for the hotel, something which is rare nowadays in even the smallest, most luxurious boutiques. To find it in a large hotel chain is really surprising, but really places the NH Grand Joanne on a bit of a pedestal.

Final Thoughts | The NH Grand Joanne Hotel
I’m not usually one for large chain hotels. My happy place is within small boutiques, the usual places where you get those unique travel experiences. There is a flip side to this though; the boutiques are usually a bit more pricey. With the NH Grand Joanne Hotel you get that same feel in a small, unique boutique, but you also have all of the security and reliability you have with larger hotel groups. Plus, your wallet won’t sting quite so much after booking it. This hotel is a bit of a gem to be honest, and is one I will definitely return to.
