The October half term is actually the perfect time to get away and find some sun. Now that more schools around the country are offering a two week break, this gives families another opportunity to escape the cold British autumn.
If you are searching for the best place for sun this October half term, here are my favourite recommendations for 2025. Enjoy!
1. The Canary Islands, Spain
If sunshine is non-negotiable, the Canary Islands are top of the list. It is farcheaper than far-flung destinations and temperatures typically reach 24–27°C.
If you read my blog a lot, you’ll know that we are big fans of Fuerteventura. My husband went every summer and practically lived out there during the summer holidays. It is perfect for people who enjoy waterspouts, fantastic food and a more chilled lifestyle. You can check out my one week in Fuerteventura post here.
Alternatively, I would suggest either Tenerife or Lanzarote. The latter is very similar to Fuerteventura, though arguably more touristy with larger hotels. Tenerife though is a completely different vibe – it is much greener and is more family-focussed.
The Canary Islands deliver in October. With average highs of 24–27°C, they’re warm enough for the beach but not uncomfortably hot for exploring.

2. Algarve, Portugal
Though a bit cooler than the Canaries, the Algarve in Portugal is another brilliant option for the October half-term. The flight is shorter and I dare say that the accommodation and deal will be too.
There is plenty to see in Algarve too. You have some lovely golden beaches to explore and Faro’s Old Town has to be one of the prettiest in Portugal.
From experience though, I would recommend booking a place with a pool. The sea during October can get pretty cold and is less than ideal.
3. Rome, Italy
Italy is always my go-to whenever I feel lost on where to go next. The food, the colours, the culture… You just can’t really beat it. Rome is one of those cities which can keep you entertained for days, as well as the little ones. Plus, October is not really peak season, meaning that you can enjoy it without the crowds.
The weather is usually warm – still not as hot as the Canary Islands – but it is nice. Plus, you are able to explore the main sites without getting too hot and sweaty. For more information, check out my post on 48 Hours in Rome.

4. Cyprus
If in doubt for a sunny destination in Europe, I would strongly suggest Cyprus. It is famously the warmest place on the continent and has some incredible beaches and history. Plus, there are plenty of family-friendly options which are perfect for those people who just want some downtime. Similarly to Portugal, Cyprus is relatively cheap compared to other destinations on this list. My one complaint is that there is not loads to see and it is very much a chilled holiday.
On the plus side though, did I mention that the food is incredible? Nothing beats authentic halloumi.
5. Mauritius
We visited the island of Mauritius back in 2023 and just had the most incredible time. Whilst the island paradise is renowned for its beaches and crystal-blue sea, there is so much more to this country.
During our week in Mauritius, we snorkelled coral reefs, explored the local ebony forest and Chamarel National Park, and even hopped across to the coral island of Île aux Aigrettes to name a few things. We of course topped this off with plenty of relaxation and cocktails, but it was the ultimate escape to relax.
Obviously, Mauritius is more on the pricy side, but you can find some great deals through British Airways this October.

6. Marrakech, Morocco
Marrakech is a fantastic choice for people who want to feel exotic, but without breaking the bank. In all honesty, this destination is arguably one of the cheapest places on the list.
If however you don’t fancy the cheaper holiday, Morocco has you covered. In Marrakech you can find plenty of new boutique hotels, and in the surrounding desert and Atlas Mountains there are also exclusive hotels waiting to be discovered.
In all honesty, this is a top destination which combines culture and adventure. Overlook it at your loss!
7. Dubai, UAE
No place will guarantee you sun quite like Dubai. In October, you are reaching the mid-thirties most days, making it a fantastic destination for travellers.
The city is basically one giant playground for tourists. You have the most impressive shopping mall you could imagine, plenty of beaches, exciting theme parks, as well as opportunities to have a camel safari in the desert.
Dubai is also surprisingly cheap to book, as is its neighbour Abu Dhabi. I would say that the prices when you arrive are not cheap – probably the most expensive on this list – but you can again find amazing deals all year round.

8. Athens, Greece
My last destination is Athens, the capital of Greece. Similar to Cyprus, you can get some cheap European sun in October for a surprisingly cheap price. It is perfect for families, as well as those who love history and culture. Athens is also surprisingly cheap to book ahead, and is also cheap when you get there, making it ideal for those travellers on a budget.
It is not as hot as the Canary Islands or those destinations outside of Europe, but similar to Rome it is the ideal temperature to explore this enchanting city.
Final Thoughts | October Half Term Sun
October half term sun is the ultimate treat to escape the gloomy British weather. I do love autumn for many reasons in the UK, but you just can’t beat a tropical getaway this time of year. This list just scratches the surface and there are other incredible destinations too.
So, where will you go this October half term?
