If you’re in Düsseldorf for work or pleasure, you need to start each day right. What could be better than a good German Frühstück? From the classic pretzel breads with cheeses and meats, to the swankier pistachio croissant-craze which has recently hit Europe, you can find something for everyone in this hip city. If you’re after the best place for breakfast in Düsseldorf, I have you covered. As somebody who has lived in the city and aims to travel here each year, I’m something of an expert on the place.
Here are all my top, personal recommendations. I hope that you find something that you’ll absolutely love. Guten Appetit!
Best Breakfast Spots in Dusseldorf
I’ve written this as a list of my favourite places with some top tips thrown in-between. If I have a dish which I particularly would recommend I’ve included that too.
Heinemann
I’ll start off with perhaps the classiest breakfast establishment in Düsseldorf first. Heinemann has served the Düsseldorf community since 1932 and has become a quintessential part of the landscape. They specialise in decadent cakes, but also serve a really excellent breakfast. In particular, you have the delicious Gourmet Breakfast (consisting of meats, cheese, egg and prosecco) which is my go-to. There is also a Student Breakfast which is for those early mornings after a very late night.
Velvet
On the topic of late nights, Velvet is a new establishment which doubles as a spot for brunch and a place to enjoy evening drinks. It is effortlessly cool and is definitely one of the up-and-coming places in Düsseldorf. The menu isn’t extensive, but does have some simple dishes to tuck into. The best days to go are Saturdays and Sundays as they have a bit more choice, however, the eggs on toast and the grilled cheese sandwich are excellent any day of the week. To be honest though, you’re going for some of the best coffee in Düsseldorf and the vibes.

Boho Brunch Café
As the name suggests, this is one of the more hipster places to go for brunch in Düsseldorf. Even if you aren’t about that life, this place is still one of the best places for breakfast in Düsseldorf. The food is served in almost art-form and is incredibly tasty. My favourite thing to have here is the pancake stack. It is topped with fruit and is delicious. The avocado on toast is also a winner.
Café Buni
If you’ve read my 2 Weeks in Japan | The Ultimate Guide for First-Time Visitors, then you’ll know that I’m a massive fan of the breakfasts here. In particular, the fluffy pancakes. A little-known fact about the Dorf is that it actually has one of the largest Japanese populations outside of Japan. Little Tokyo as it is lovingly known is filled with authentic cafés, and Café Buni is one of the best places for an authentic experience. Their pancakes are more soufflé-like than anything else and come in various flavours. Did I also mention that it serves some of the best matcha in the city?

Soulbrunch
Soulbrunch specialises in an all-day brunch which has an incredible variety. In fact, it would be difficult for somebody to go and not find something which they love. I also love the boho-vibes here. The entire place feels especially zen and peaceful; arguably the perfect style for enjoying good food. My personal favourite dish is the Love Pancakes. These are a raspberry-lovers dream. Another must-try is their selection of bread and toppings, especially the goat’s cheese. I am always a sucker for this.
Cloud Kitchen
One of my all-time favourite places to eat in Düsseldorf is Cloud Kitchen. I again love the interior and the decor-choice. It feels really laid-back and minimalistic, with more of a focus on the excellent food. You have a good selection for brunch again, but the highlight here is the shakshuka. Possibly some of the best I’ve tasted. I also really liked their croissant-based brunches, something which is really underutilised in Germany!
Nooij Dutch Deli
You’ll find this European restaurant near the Hauptbahnhof. It is truly stylish and specialises in (you guessed it) Dutch cuisine but with a German twist. You have a great selection of cheeses and spreads, as well as juices and sweet treats like waffles. Like many other breakfast spots on this list, it is also effortlessly cool. The interior is incredibly modern and it is just a great place to hang out.

Bäckerei Hinkel
If you are after authentic German bread, then Bäckerei Hinkel is the place to go. There are actually three different shops across the city, making it a truly Düsseldorf brand. Whilst you can’t just sit in and have breakfast, I think that this is ideal for people who want to enjoy a breakfast in a rented apartment. The bread is absolutely delicious and – when paired with German meats and cheeses – makes for the perfect German Frühstück, the way many households have it across the country.
Café am Schloss Benrath
Outside of the city centre is a little place called Benrath. It is where you find the stunning Benrath Palace, known for its vibrant pink exterior. Café am Schloss Benrath is a cute little café which is perfect to start your day of exploring this neck of the woods. The café serves a limited menu, but I’ve had nothing but excellent experiences here. They are open every weekend (10:00 – 13:00), as well as Mondays / Tuesdays (11:00 – 13:00), but you need to book ahead first. Once you’ve finished your breakfast though, it is perfectly positioned to go exploring this lesser-seen part of Düsseldorf.

ARTA
ARTA is a very small and unassuming breakfast place in Düsseldorf, but is easily one of the best. The food here is exceptional. It is all fresh, well-presented and extremely tasty. I particularly loved their avocado on toast – possibly one of the best I’ve had for a while! It is just by Velvet – another spot on this list – just outside of the Old Town.
Seven Sundays
This one is the first to specialise in breakfast all day. Why? Because we all know that this is when the best food is served. Whilst it is a small chain, the Seven Sundays offers a different style of menu. It is a bit more American / British rather than German, but it is still incredibly tasty. What’s even better though is that you don’t need to rush to get here; you can even enjoy it as a second breakfast.
Final Thoughts | Best Place for Breakfast in Düsseldorf
I hope that this post helped you find the best place for you to enjoy breakfast in Düsseldorf. I’ve only really included my favourites here, but the city does have something for everyone. More recently, the vibe has become a lot cooler and hipster, meaning that the food is more orientated towards the younger generations. However, there is still an element of that delicious traditional German breakfast which we all know and love.
