Arguably my favourite day trip from Glasgow is, of course, Loch Lomond. It is just a short train or car journey from the city centre and has to be one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. Not only that, but it is perfect for all sorts of travellers. Whether you’re seeking a bit of peace by the water, some outdoor adventures or just sightseeing, I hope this blog post shows you how to make the most of your day trip to Loch Lomond. Enjoy!
Getting to Loch Lomond from Glasgow
A day trip to Loch Lomond from Glasgow is incredibly easy. The Loch is only 20 miles north of the city and it is almost a continuous journey down the M8 motorway. This will take anywhere between 40-50 minutes depending on traffic and times.
If you haven’t got access to a car, the train is just as easy. We usually do this – it is quicker and means that you can enjoy a beer or two in the sun! Trains run regularly from Glasgow’s Queen Street to Balloch (the southern-most point of the loch).
Morning Options: Exploring Balloch and the Southern Shores of Loch Lomond
Option 1: Balloch Castle and Country Park 🏰🌳
If you are visiting for the first time, I would recommend a visit to Balloch Castle and the surrounding Country Park. It is not far from the train station if you are travelling this way and is the obvious first stop. This ancient estate has plenty of lovely walking paths along the Loch and scenic views. You’ll also see beautiful gardens and quiet woodlands to explore.

Option 2. Take a Boat Tour on Loch Lomond 🚤🌅
No visit to Scotland is complete without a boat tour of a Loch. Lomond has some amazing views and you can see landmarks like Inchmurrin Island (the largest island in the Loch) and the ruins of Lennox Castle. You’ll also be able to see the incredible scenery with a tasty drink in-hand.
With Lomond’s popularity you’ll find plenty of places and companies that run tours. We usually use Get Your Guide which run three different options, the cheapest of which comes in at £18.00 per person and runs for one hour. For a longer cruise of two hours, you’re looking at about £28.00. If you go direct through the Balloch tourist office (immediately off the train station), there are other options available too on the day.

Afternoon Options : Outdoor Activities and Scenic Views
Option 1: Hike Conic Hill for Stunning Panoramic Views 🏞️
If you are into hiking and walking, there is arguably no better place for it than Scotland. After lunch, head over to Balmaha. You can do this by bus or by car and the journey should take about half an hour. In this small village you’ll be able to climb up Conic Hill, where you’ll see some of the best views of the Loch. The climb is not too strenuous (it is considered one of the easier hikes in the area) and takes anywhere between 1-1.5 hours.
Option 2: Visit the Loch Lomond Shores 🛍️🌸
If hiking is not your thing, then you could spend the afternoon by the Loch Lomond Shores near Balloch. There is a decently-sized shopping and leisure complex by the waterfront and it is perfect for families. You’ll find boutiques, several restaurants and even the Loch Lomond Aquarium here. If you continue round, there is also a high-ropes course for children. I should say that this area is quite busy, so if you are after a peaceful afternoon this may not be for you!
Option 3: Discover the Village of Luss 🏡🌿
For a peaceful escape, you could head to the small, quaint village of Luss. There is a frequent bus service that runs here (every 20 minutes) and it is only a 14 minute drive if you have a car. The village does not have loads in it – there are houses, displays and a few cafes / restaurants. However, it is one of the most peaceful settings around. Nearby is Luss Forest which is perfect for an afternoon walk.
If you are looking for a quiet day trip to Loch Lomond from Glasgow, away from many of the tourists, then Luss could be the one.

Evening Options: Sunset Views and Return to Glasgow
Option 1: Enjoy a Relaxing Dinner with Loch Views 🍽️🍷
If you have time to spare, then a dinner out by the Loch is the ultimate way to end your day trip. Fortunately, there are plenty of places to choose from! The Balloch House is one of the most popular restaurants and serves classic, hearty Scottish food. Another option for this is the Waterhouse Inn. If you have had enough of British cuisine, then try Cucina, a popular Italian restaurant.
Option 2: Return to Glasgow 🚗🛤️
If you just want to get back to Glasgow, then the city of course has plenty to do in the evening. For more information, check out my blog posts on 24 hours in Glasgow.

Final Thoughts
